Our cables

Verena

Verena is a new 630-kilometre subsea fibre-optic cable system designed to strengthen connectivity between the UK and Scandinavia. The 16-fibre-pair cable will connect Scarborough on the east coast of England with Esbjerg in Denmark and is scheduled to be ready for service in the fourth quarter of 2028.

The cable is named after Verena Winifred Holmes (1889–1964), a British mechanical engineer, inventor, and pioneer for women in engineering. As the first woman elected to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1924, she embodied innovation, determination, and the courage to break new ground—values that continue to inspire ambitious infrastructure projects today.

For Midgard Infra, Verena is more than a new cable. It is part of the hidden infrastructure that keeps the digital world connected. Inspired by Yggdrasil, the great tree of Norse mythology whose roots bind worlds together, Verena will become another essential root in the region’s digital ecosystem—an invisible but critical link carrying data beneath the North Sea.

Built to meet growing demand for capacity, resilience, and network diversity, Verena will create a new strategic route between the UK and the Nordics. By strengthening connectivity across Northern Europe, the system will support the continued growth of digital infrastructure and provide a robust foundation for the next generation of data traffic.
